For them, Halloween was a night of tricks, spooky stories and scary movies. Mischief and thrills with adrenaline and hormones. But it’s not until you are alone in the dark that your mind plays the real tricks.

The midnight shadows seemed to be extra dark as she lay awake in her bed. And they appeared to be shifting. She thought she saw a movement in the corner, and the closet appeared to be inching slowly open. She gazed a little harder as her eyes adjusted to the darkness.

Something was different…

…The Alice doll was no longer hanging on the door

Emerging from the cloak of shadows, she saw a flash of white, blue. Then dark eyes. Alice was looming towards her. Her mind raced with thoughts and denial, then everything went black.

She became aware of her arm being elevated, but she didn't move it. Then her head wrenched to one side, she felt herself being hauled into the light

‘I must be dreaming’ she thought. Until then she saw Alice disturbingly larger than life, and very much alive. In her hand was a stick strung with twine. Her eyes followed the cords downwards until saw her own hand tied to the other end.

She wanted to scream, but her mouth wouldn’t open. ‘ Wake up, please!!!’ she thought. Then the strings pulled her along the floor in a macabre dance
